Adding fruit to a salad makes a salad both refreshing and colorful.
With the popular salad-eating culture these days, the dish that once included a few leaves and a simple dressing has inspired restaurants and cafes, such as Just Salad, to offer rich and decadent salad menus. New ingredients, from lentils to pickled vegetables to various cheeses, has transformed the dish into complex concoctions.
A salad used to be made of the most basic ingredients. Lettuce, one (or two) vegetables, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper. I still like to eat it that way. After a hearty meal, a salad can aid in digestion and cleanse the palette. Adding citrus or berries to the mix gives the dish a sweet and tangy flavor. Paired with a few slices of cheese and a baguette, your have a perfect brunch without all the frills. Here are my suggestions:
1. Pears. Thinly sliced Bosc pears go well with honey, parmesan, and nuts.
2. Dried Fruit. Cranberries are one of the most popular dried fruit to put in salads, next to feta cheese and walnuts. Dare to use dried apricots, dates, cherries, or mangos in your next salad.
3. Figs. Fresh figs are a much more luxurious fruit than their dried counterparts. The creamy and juicy texture pairs well with baby mixed greens, arugula, or endive.
4. Grapes. Mixing white, purple, or black grapes with grape tomatoes creates a colorful dish. Avoid using too much vinegar in the dressing, as the citrus juices from the grapes and tomatoes will do just fine.
5. Peaches or Nectarines. Adding sliced peaches or nectarines makes a tropical and tangy salad. Add lemon juice to the dressing to keep the fruit fresh.
6. Lemons or Oranges. Adding cubes of a citrus fruit, such as lemons or oranges, helps cleanse the palette after a big meal. Olive oil, salt, and pepper is a perfect and simple accompaniment to the bold tastes of the citrus.
7. Mangoes or Papaya. The sweetness of these tropical fruits are balanced well by creamy cheeses, such as feta or Gorgonzola.
8. Apples. Hard and crisp apples are a great way to perk up a salad in autumn or winter. Stick to red delicious or gala apples, as they have a tendency to stay crisp and fresh longer than a golden or Macintosh apple. Use lemon juice to help them keep their white color. Avoid adding cheese to a salad with apples. If you must add anything, you can sprinkle walnuts or thinly sliced almonds.
